Demaryius Thomas was born on December 25, 1987, to Bobby and Katina Thomas in Montrose, Georgia. Following his mother's arrest and subsequent 20-year prison sentence for drug-related charges, Thomas was raised by his aunt and uncle. A shy and introverted child, he attended West Laurens High School in Dexter, Georgia, where he began playing football as a wide receiver. In addition to football, Thomas also competed in track and basketball during his high school years.
By the end of high school, Thomas had gained significant attention for his athletic abilities. He was ranked 22nd among wide receivers by Scout.com and 34th by Rivals.com. His impressive performance attracted scholarship offers from several universities, including Georgia Tech, Duke, and the University of Georgia. Ultimately, he chose Georgia Tech for his collegiate career beginning in 2006.
Although Thomas enrolled at Georgia Tech in 2006, he redshirted his first season and did not start playing until 2007. That year, he earned recognition from Sporting News as a member of the Freshman All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team and received an honorable mention for All-America honors. His performance throughout college solidified his status as a promising NFL prospect.
Thomas entered the NFL Draft in 2010 and was selected in the first round by the Denver Broncos as the 22nd overall pick. He signed a five-year contract worth $12.155 million. His rookie season was marred by injuries, but he managed to make an impact with the second-most catches by a rookie in franchise history. In 2011, despite ongoing injury issues, Thomas recorded 32 receptions for 551 yards and four touchdowns.
Determined to remain healthy, Thomas committed to rigorous training ahead of the 2012 season. The hard work paid off; he played a critical role in the Broncos’ offense and earned his first Pro Bowl selection that year. He repeated this success in 2013, once again earning a Pro Bowl nod and being named to the Associated Press All-Pro team.
