Erika Christensen was born in 1982 in Seattle, Washington. She is the daughter of Kathy, a construction manager, and Steven Christensen, an insurance worker and human resources executive. Erika has an older half-brother named Nick and two younger twin brothers, Brando and Dane. She has a diverse heritage, comprising Irish, Welsh, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, and Icelandic ancestry.
Raised in suburban Los Angeles, California, Erika was homeschooled and began her acting career in television commercials, including one for McDonald’s. She was brought up as a member of the Church of Scientology, a faith her parents embraced when they were young.
Erika Christensen made her film debut in the 1997 comedy Leave It to Beaver and appeared in a single episode of the TV series Nothing Sacred. She guest-starred on several popular TV series, including Touched by an Angel, 3rd Rock from the Sun, The Practice, and Frasier. In 1999, she starred in the Disney Channel original movie Can of Worms.
She also had a role in the short-lived CBS sitcom Thanks as Abigail Winthrop, and appeared alongside Jean Malone in Michael Jackson's music video for the song “Childhood.”
Erika gained critical acclaim for her role in the 2000 film Traffic, where she portrayed a high school student struggling with drug addiction. For this performance, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and received the MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Female Performance.
She went on to star in a string of film and television projects, including Swimfan, Flightplan, The Banger Sisters, The Perfect Score, The Tortured, and How to Rob a Bank.
In 2006, Erika starred in the ABC drama Six Degrees, though the series was short-lived. Her most notable television role came in 2010 when she was cast as Julia Braverman-Graham in the NBC family drama Parenthood. The show ran until 2015 and earned her a Gracie Award in 2014 for her performance.
She also appeared in the ABC crime drama series Wicked City, portraying the character Betty Beaumontaine.
