Julia O’Hara Stiles was born in 1981 in New York City. She grew up in the SoHo neighborhood, which at the time was a largely abandoned industrial area. Julia is the eldest of three siblings. Her mother, Judith, created ceramic artwork and sold it at local markets, while her father, John, was a second-grade teacher who supported his wife's artistic endeavors.
From a young age, Julia showed a strong interest in theater, particularly in the works of William Shakespeare. Encouraged by her parents, she frequently attended live theater performances and became increasingly vocal during family discussions, especially about politics. At the age of six, she began participating in plays and soon found herself drawn to both acting and writing.
Julia began acting when she was just 11 years old. She wrote a letter to the director of New York’s La MaMa Theatre, which led to her first opportunity in the performing arts. She also enjoyed imitating characters from television shows like The Honeymooners, using these experiences to develop her skills.
