Her father, a French-speaking native of Louisiana, is of Cajun, Sicilian, and English descent and worked as a maintenance operations representative for an oil company. Her mother has English, Scottish, and distant Italian ancestry. Lacey grew up in a large family and later moved to New York as a child. She has expressed pride in her Southern roots and close-knit family upbringing.
Lacey began acting at the age of six and got her major television break at around age 11 when she was cast as Claudia Salinger, a gifted orphan violinist, in the acclaimed teen drama Party of Five (1994–2000).
