Lil Flip, born Wesley Eric Weston Jr. in 1981, is an American rapper hailing from Houston, Texas. From a young age, he developed a passion for music and began rapping during his school years. Known for his impressive freestyle skills, he reportedly excelled in oral English through his lyrical abilities, eventually growing into a standout talent within the local music scene.
Lil Flip gained initial recognition with the release of his independent debut album, The Leprechaun, which drew the attention of legendary Houston DJ Screw. Impressed by his style, DJ Screw welcomed Lil Flip into The Screwed Up Click, a prominent collective in Texas’ underground rap scene. DJ Screw even dubbed him the "Freestyle King," further elevating his status among Southern hip-hop artists.
Following the success of The Leprechaun, Lil Flip secured a recording contract with Universal Records. However, the period also sparked a public feud with rapper T.I. over who deserved the title "King of the South," a dispute that attracted considerable media attention.
During this time, Lil Flip remained active in the mixtape circuit, releasing a series of freestyle-heavy compilations and maintaining visibility among fans. Although he had planned to release another album in 2005, conflicts with Sony led to delays, leaving him briefly without a major label. He eventually partnered with Asylum Records to release I Need Mine in 2007, another double-disc album that featured a diverse set of collaborations and further reinforced his status in the industry.
Following the release of I Need Mine, Lil Flip collaborated on two notable projects: All Eyez on Us with Young Noble of the Outlawz, and Young Money with Gudda Gudda. After parting ways with Columbia Records, he decided to pursue an independent path and founded his own label, Clover G Records. His fourth studio album, Ahead of My Time, was originally slated for release in 2007 but faced multiple delays before finally coming out in 2010. Leading up to it, he released two promotional projects: Underground Legend 2 and Respect Me.
