Marton Csokas

Marton Paul Csokas, widely known as Marton Csokas, was born on June 30, 1966, in Invercargill, New Zealand. His father, also named Marton Csokas, was a Hungarian mechanical engineer and a former trapeze artist with the Hungarian Circus. His mother, Margaret Christine, an Australian nurse, is of Danish, English, and Irish descent. Reflecting his heritage, Csokas holds dual citizenship in Hungary and New Zealand.

He completed his secondary education at King's College in Auckland. Pursuing higher education, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Canterbury. In 1989, Csokas graduated from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School, one of the country's top institutions for performing arts training.

Early Stage Work and Theatre Foundations

Marton Csokas began his professional acting career in 1990 with a role in the Taki Rua Theatre production of Te Whānau a Tuanj Jones, directed by Apirana Taylor. This debut on stage laid the foundation for a career that would span theatre, television, and film. In 1995, he co-founded The Stronghold Theatre, further demonstrating his dedication to the performing arts.

Standing 6 feet 1 inch tall, Csokas brought a strong presence to every role he undertook. His early stage experiences were critical in shaping his technique and style, eventually guiding him towards on-screen success.

Breakthrough in Television and Film

Csokas first appeared on television in the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street, playing the character Leonard Dodds from 1993 to 1996. His film debut came in 1996 with the role of Dennis in the comedy Jack Brown Genius. That same year, he portrayed Darko in the critically recognized romantic drama Broken English.

He gained further recognition for his recurring role as Borias in the popular fantasy series Xena: Warrior Princess from 1997 to 2001. In 2002, Csokas played the villain Yorgi in the action film xXx opposite Vin Diesel. A year later, he portrayed Mr. Smith in Kangaroo Jack. These performances showcased his versatility, transitioning smoothly between television, romantic roles, and action films.
