Modeling Career

Gubler began his career as a fashion model. He was discovered by a modeling agent while attending NYU. During his modeling career, he worked with high-profile brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, American Eagle, and Marc Jacobs. His background in modeling contributed to his initial recognition in the entertainment industry.

Breakthrough with Criminal Minds

Gubler's first major break in acting came after he secured an internship with director Wes Anderson. This opportunity led to his small role in Anderson’s film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Shortly thereafter, he was cast as Dr. Spencer Reid, a brilliant FBI agent, on the CBS crime drama series Criminal Minds. Gubler portrayed the character from the show's inception in 2005 through its conclusion in 2020, becoming best known for this long-standing role.

Film and Voice Acting Roles

Though his roles in movies and other television series are fewer compared to his work on Criminal Minds, Gubler has appeared in films such as (500) Days of Summer and Suburban Gothic—for which he won a Best Actor award at Screamfest. He has also lent his voice to several animated films. Prominently, he provided the voice of Simon the Chipmunk in the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise, including titles like Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. His voice work also includes roles in All-Star Superman, Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur, and Batman: Assault on Arkham, where he voiced the Riddler.

Directing and Creative Endeavors

Beyond acting, Gubler is also a director and filmmaker. He directed multiple episodes of Criminal Minds and made his directorial debut with the short film Do Not Shoot Me Santa, a music video for The Killers. He also wrote and directed other short projects such as Matthew Gray Gubler’s Life Aquatic Intern Journal and The Unauthorized Documentary, along with experimental works like The Cactus That Looked Just Like a Man.
