Matthew Gray Gubler was born in 1980 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts, where he initially focused on acting before pursuing film directing at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Gubler began his career in entertainment as a model. He was discovered by a modeling agent while studying at NYU. He went on to model for prominent fashion labels such as Tommy Hilfiger, American Eagle, and Marc Jacobs.
Gubler made his acting debut in Wes Anderson’s 2004 film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. His performance in the film helped him land the role of Dr. Spencer Reid on the CBS crime drama Criminal Minds, which became his most recognizable work. He starred in the series from its inception in 2005 until its conclusion in 2020, earning a dedicated fanbase.
Alongside Criminal Minds, Gubler appeared in several other films, including 500 Days of Summer, Life After Beth, The Ugly Life of a Beautiful Girl, Suburban Gothic, How to Be a Serial Killer, and The Great Buck Howard.
Gubler has also gained recognition for his voice work in animated films. He voiced Simon in the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise, which includes Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Squeakquel, and other sequels. He also contributed voices in projects such as Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur, All-Star Superman, and a variety of other animated features. His television appearances include guest roles in shows like Arrested Development, Celebrity Ghost Stories, and The Beauty Inside.
