Wayuu Taya Foundation and Philanthropy

Patricia Velásquez is the founder of the Wayuu Taya Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of the Wayuu people in Venezuela and Colombia. Her work with the foundation has focused on health, education, nutrition, and sustainable development. Following the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, she also helped raise funds for disaster relief efforts.

Personal Life and Advocacy

Velásquez is multilingual, fluent in Spanish, English, French, and Italian. In her memoir, Straight Walk, she shares personal aspects of her upbringing, including her experience growing up in poverty in Venezuela and her journey toward understanding her sexual identity. She publicly came out as a lesbian in the book, and discussed her past relationship with comedian Sandra Bernhard. Velásquez is also a mother to her daughter, Mia.
