Sean Tuohy is an American sports commentator, public speaker, entrepreneur, and former college basketball player. He is widely recognized as the adoptive parent of former NFL player Michael Oher.
Sean Albro Tuohy was born on November 23, 1959, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was raised in a Roman Catholic household by his parents, Mida and Edward "Skeets" Tuohy. During his youth, Sean attended Isidore Newman School, where he was active in sports. Although he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds to play professional baseball, he declined the offer to pursue a college education.
Sean accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where he became a standout point guard. He was a member of the Mississippi Alpha chapter of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and left a lasting legacy in Ole Miss athletics.
During his time at Ole Miss, Sean Tuohy led the Rebels to their first-ever Southeastern Conference (SEC) Men’s Basketball Tournament championship appearance and subsequently broke several SEC assist records. By the time he graduated, Tuohy held the all-time assist record at Ole Miss and was recognized as one of the top point guards in SEC history.
After college, Tuohy was selected by the New Jersey Nets in the 1982 NBA Draft. However, his professional basketball career was short-lived, and he played briefly overseas before returning to the United States to be with his ailing father.
