Early Life and Education
Sony Michel was born on February 17, 1995. His parents immigrated to the United States from Haiti a year after the birth of their daughter, Lamise. Michel attended American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida, where he emerged as a standout student-athlete. As the starting running back for the American Heritage Patriots, he excelled during his high school career. In his senior season, Michel rushed for 1,833 yards and recorded 24 touchdowns, earning widespread attention from college programs across the country.
Michel played college football for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. As a freshman in 2014, he appeared in eight games and made one start. His season was impacted by a fractured shoulder blade, which caused him to miss five games. Despite the setback, he rushed for 410 yards on 64 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns. Over his collegiate career, Michel became known for his versatility, speed, and ability to perform under pressure, contributing significantly to Georgia's offensive success.
Michel was selected by the New England Patriots in the first round (31st overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he played a crucial role in the Patriots' offense. During the 2018–2019 postseason, Michel delivered an outstanding performance. In the AFC Divisional Round against the Los Angeles Chargers, he carried the ball 24 times for 129 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns, helping lead the team to a 41–28 victory. His contributions were instrumental in the Patriots' successful playoff run, which culminated in a Super Bowl LIII championship.
