Early Life and Education

Tracee Ellis Ross, born Tracee Joy Silberstein on October 29, 1972, in Los Angeles, California, is an accomplished American actress, television host, and producer. She is the daughter of legendary singer Diana Ross and music executive Robert Ellis Silberstein. Her siblings include half-brother Evan Ross, an actor and musician, and sister Chudney Ross. Raised in a household surrounded by music and performance, Ross began her career as a fashion model during her teenage years, working with notable photographers such as Herb Ritts, Francesco Scavullo, Mario Testino, and Peter Lindbergh.

Ross attended Brown University, where she graduated in 1994 with a degree in Theatre. Her early career also included editorial work, having served as a fashion editor for publications such as New York Magazine and Mirabella.

Acting Career and Breakthrough Role

Tracee Ellis Ross launched her acting career with independent films and television variety programs. She made her screen debut in the 1996 drama Far Harbor, playing a biracial Jewish and African-American woman. That same year, she began hosting a Lifetime television magazine series.

Her first major film role was in the 2000 Diane Keaton-directed comedy-drama Hanging Up. Around that time, she also featured in the MTV sketch comedy show The Lyricist Lounge Show. Ross's breakout came in 2000 when she was cast as Joan Clayton on the UPN/CW television series Girlfriends. The show ran successfully until 2008 and brought her widespread recognition.

Further Film and Television Work

Ross expanded her acting portfolio by starring in Tyler Perry’s 2007 feature film Daddy’s Little Girls. In 2009, she appeared in the comedy film Labor Pains alongside Lindsay Lohan. She also guest-starred in medical drama Private Practice in 2010 as a pregnant doctor and portrayed the estranged wife of Laurence Fishburne’s character in a four-episode story arc of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
