Early Life and Education

Born Tracee Joy Silberstein, she comes from a diverse background—her mother is African-American, and her father is Jewish-American. Ross has a younger half-brother, Evan Ross, who is also an actor and musician. She spent her early years in New York and also attended boarding school in Switzerland. From a young age, she exhibited a strong interest in theater and the performing arts, which led her to pursue a degree in theater from Brown University, graduating in 1994. During her teenage years, Ross worked as a model and gained experience in the fashion industry, including a stint as a fashion editor.

Tracee adopted the surname “Ross” from her mother but also honors her father, with whom she shares a close relationship. This blended identity reflects her dual heritage and has informed much of her public persona.

Acting and Television Career

Ross began her career in the entertainment industry with modeling but soon transitioned into film and television. She made her film debut in the 1996 independent film Far Harbor, playing a mixed-heritage woman. Around the same time, she explored dance and briefly appeared in pop culture segments, although contrary to some reports, she was not one of the dancers in the “Macarena” music video.

Her foray into television began with hosting the pop culture show The Dish. She also appeared in MTV's sketch comedy series The Lyricist Lounge Show, showcasing her comedic talents. However, her breakout role came in 2000 when she starred as Joan Carol Clayton, a successful but neurotic lawyer, in the sitcom Girlfriends. The show ran for eight seasons and earned her critical acclaim, establishing her as a leading actress in television comedy.

Later, she solidified her television legacy with the hit ABC series Black-ish, where she portrayed Rainbow Johnson. Her performance in the role received widespread praise and further showcased her range as both a comedic and dramatic actress.
