In 2019, YNW Melly collaborated with Kanye West on the track "Mixed Personalities," which was included in Melly's album We All Shine. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty if he is convicted.

In April 2020, while in custody at Broward County Jail, Melly tested positive for COVID-19. He subsequently requested a temporary release on medical grounds, which was denied by the court.
