Christopher Heyerdahl

Christopher Heyerdahl is a Canadian actor known for his versatile performances across film and television. Born in the mountains of British Columbia, he comes from a family of Norwegian and Scottish heritage. His father immigrated to Canada from Norway in the 1950s, and the famed adventurer Thor Heyerdahl, known for the Kon-Tiki expedition, is his father's cousin. A fluent Norwegian speaker, Christopher spent time studying at the University of Oslo, further connecting with his cultural roots.

Notable Television and Film Roles

Heyerdahl gained major recognition for his role as Thor Gundersen, also known as "The Swede," in the AMC series Hell on Wheels, a performance that solidified his place as a compelling character actor. Earlier in his career, he portrayed Leonid in the Nickelodeon horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark?

His science fiction credits are notable, including Commander Todd in Stargate Atlantis and Pallan in the Stargate SG-1 episode titled “Revisions.” Additionally, he portrayed the iconic writer H.P. Lovecraft in the film Out of Mind: The Stories of H.P. Lovecraft.

In the popular series Supernatural, he appeared in three episodes as the demon Alastair. Heyerdahl also had recurring roles in Smallville as Zor-El and in Sanctuary as both John Druitt and Bigfoot, showcasing his range in complex, often dual roles.

Heyerdahl has participated in a variety of film projects, including roles in Catwoman, La Femme Nikita, and Lassie. He joined the high-profile cast of The Twilight Saga as Marcus, one of the ancient vampire leaders of the Volturi. He portrayed the role in New Moon, as well as in both parts of Breaking Dawn, adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s widely successful novels.

In 2012, he took on the role of Dieter Braun in the fifth season of HBO’s True Blood. His portrayal further established his prowess in portraying enigmatic and dark characters. Heyerdahl continued his standout performance in Hell on Wheels on AMC, a role he held from 2011 until the series concluded.
