Broadcast Journalism Career at CNN

Daryn Kagan is an American broadcast journalist best known for her tenure at CNN. From 1994 to 2006, she served as a main anchor based at CNN’s world headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. During this time, she anchored "CNN Live Today," airing weekdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Eastern Time for more than eight years. Kagan was also the host of CNN's entertainment news program "People in the News," produced in partnership with People magazine. Earlier in her CNN career, she worked as both a sports reporter and news anchor.

Early Life and Education

Daryn Kagan was born in 1963 and grew up in Beverly Hills, California. She graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1981, where she was involved in cross-country running. She then attended Stanford University, graduating with a degree in communications. Determined to enter the broadcasting field, Kagan sent demo tapes to various television stations after graduation.

Early Career in Local News

Kagan’s first on-air job was at KEYT-TV, a local station in Santa Barbara, California. She later moved to KTVK in Phoenix, Arizona, where she worked as a general assignment reporter. Her interest in sports reporting led her to take on additional responsibilities as weekend sports anchor, while continuing to report news throughout the week.

Transition to National Sports Reporting

When her contract with KTVK was not renewed, Kagan was hired by CNN/SI, CNN's now-defunct sports network, thanks to Jim Walton, a CNN executive. She quickly became a correspondent and sports anchor, covering prominent events such as international figure skating championships, NBA playoffs, and the Super Bowl.
