She is the daughter of Adella, an elementary school teacher, and Stephen James Krall, an accountant. Encouraged by this environment, Krall began playing piano at the age of four. She studied formally through The Royal Conservatory of Music, where she honed her classical technique while also developing a deep interest in jazz. Krall earned a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she studied from 1981 to 1983.
