Early Life and Education

Gregg Marshall was born on February 27, 1963, in Greenwood, South Carolina. He attended Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Virginia, graduating in 1981. Following high school, he enrolled at Randolph-Macon College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business and economics in 1985. He later pursued graduate studies at the University of Richmond, receiving a master’s degree in sport management in 1987.

Coaching Career: Early Years

Marshall began his coaching career as an assistant at Randolph-Macon College from 1985 to 1987. He then served as an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey College during the 1987–88 season. From 1988 to 1996, he was an assistant under head coach John Kresse at the College of Charleston. During that time, the team earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament in 1994 and participated in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in both 1995 and 1996. From 1996 to 1998, Marshall worked as an assistant coach at Marshall University.

Success at Winthrop University

In 1998, Gregg Marshall became the head coach of the Winthrop University men’s basketball team. During his first season (1998–99), he led the team to a 19–8 record and captured the Big South Conference Tournament title, earning the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Over nine seasons at Winthrop, he led the Eagles to seven NCAA Tournament appearances and six Big South Conference regular season titles (1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007). The team also secured Big South Tournament championships in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007, along with six 20-win seasons. Marshall was named Big South Coach of the Year four times and notably led the 2006–07 team to an undefeated record in conference play. Although he was briefly considered for the head coaching position at the College of Charleston in 2006, he ultimately remained at Winthrop before accepting the head coaching role at Wichita State University on April 14, 2007.
