Early Life and Military Service

James Arness was an American actor born on May 26, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Ruth Duesler and Rolf Cirkler Aurness. He was the older brother of actor Peter Graves. Arness attended John Burroughs Grade School and Washburn High School before graduating from West High School in Minneapolis. Before pursuing an acting career, he worked in various jobs, including as a courier for a jewelry wholesaler, a logger, and a freight yard laborer for Burlington freight yards.

During World War II, Arness was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a rifleman. He participated in the Battle of Anzio in Italy on January 22, 1944, where he was severely wounded in his right leg. Following multiple surgeries, he was honorably discharged on January 29, 1945. For his military service, he received several honors, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Acting Career and Breakthrough with "Gunsmoke"

After the war, Arness began his acting career, making his film debut in The Farmer's Daughter in 1947. He became known for his numerous roles in Western films and developed a close friendship with fellow actor John Wayne, who recommended Arness for his most iconic role.

Arness achieved lasting fame as Marshal Matt Dillon in the television series Gunsmoke, which ran from 1955 to 1975, making it one of the longest-running scripted primetime TV dramas in history. His deep voice and towering presence helped define the steadfast lawman character, making Arness a household name across America.

Personal Life and Legacy

James Arness married Virginia Chapman in 1948. The couple had three children, including one adopted son. They divorced in 1960. Arness later married Janet Surtees, and they remained together until his death.

James Arness passed away from natural causes on June 3, 2011, at his home in Los Angeles. He was survived by his wife Janet and two sons. Arness left behind a legacy as one of the most enduring figures in television history and continues to be remembered for his contributions to the Western genre.
