Her father worked as a contractor and builder. Jami grew up alongside her two brothers, Michael and Scott Gertz. She graduated from Maine East High School in 1983, where she first showcased her talents by participating in a school talent show that led to her discovery.

In 1989, Jami Gertz married Antony Ressler, a billionaire American businessman and co-founder of Ares Management. The couple has maintained a strong relationship and currently resides in Beverly Park. Together, they have three children: Oliver Jordan Ressler, Nicholas Simon Ressler, and Theo Ressler. Their extended property holdings include a residence in Malibu, California.

Jami Gertz began her acting career in the 1981 film Endless Love, which also marked the film debut of Tom Cruise. She gained widespread attention with her roles in teen-focused movies such as Sixteen Candles and Mischief. Gertz earned critical acclaim for her performance in Less Than Zero (1987), where she starred alongside Robert Downey Jr. Notably, in the cult classic The Lost Boys (1987), she portrayed a 'half-vampire,' further diversifying her portfolio.
