In 2007, Simpson gained significant recognition in theater when he portrayed Philo T. Farnsworth in the Broadway production of "The Farnsworth Invention" by Aaron Sorkin. He starred opposite Hank Azaria, and his performance earned him a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut Performance.

Personal Life

Simpson met actress Melanie Lynskey on the set of "Rose Red" in 2001. The couple became engaged in 2005 and were married on April 14, 2007, in a chapel ceremony in Queenstown, New Zealand. Their marriage ended when Lynskey filed for divorce in September 2012, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was finalized in May 2014.
