John Goodman was born in Affton, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. His father, Leslie Francis Goodman, was a postal worker who died of a heart attack when John was just two years old. After his father's passing, his mother, Virginia Goodman, took on multiple jobs to support the family. Goodman has one brother and one sister, and his ancestry includes German, Welsh, English, and Irish roots.

He attended Affton High School, where he played football and became involved in theater. His athletic talent earned him a football scholarship to Missouri State University in Springfield, where he studied drama before an injury ended his football career and led him to concentrate fully on acting.
