John Oliver is an English comedian, writer, political commentator, and actor. He is best known for hosting the HBO series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
John William Oliver was born on April 23, 1977, in Erdington, Birmingham, United Kingdom, to Carole and Jim Oliver. His father was a school headmaster and social worker, while his mother worked as a music teacher. A lifelong supporter of Liverpool F.C., Oliver spent much of his youth dreaming of becoming a professional soccer player.
Oliver attended Mark Rutherford School in Bedford before enrolling at Christ’s College, Cambridge. There, he studied English and graduated in 1998. While at Cambridge, he was an active member of the Cambridge Footlights, a renowned theatrical club known for producing notable British comedians.
Oliver first gained attention at the 2001 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In 2004 and 2005, he teamed up with fellow comedian Andy Zaltzman to co-host Political Animal, a live and radio show featuring comedians performing politically themed sets. The program eventually aired on BBC Radio 4.
His move to the United States marked a turning point in his career. In 2006, he joined The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as a senior British correspondent. His satirical reporting quickly made him a fan favorite and earned him multiple accolades, including an Emmy Award in 2009 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Series.
In 2008, he released his first televised stand-up special, John Oliver: Terrifying Times, on Comedy Central. During this period, he also co-hosted the satirical podcast The Bugle with Andy Zaltzman.
Since 2014, Oliver has hosted Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, a late-night news satire television program on HBO. The show is widely acclaimed for its in-depth, witty, and often hard-hitting analysis of political and social issues. It has earned multiple awards, including more than 20 Primetime Emmy Awards and multiple Writers Guild of America Awards.
In addition to his work on television, Oliver voiced the character of Zazu, the hornbill advisor, in Disney’s 2019 live-action adaptation of The Lion King. The film received mixed reviews, with some critics questioning the value of remakes, while others praised it for introducing classic stories to a new generation.
John Oliver is married to Kate Norley, a U.S. Army veteran who served as a combat medic during the Iraq War. She currently works as a veterans’ rights advocate and has been involved with the organization Vets for Freedom. The couple met during the 2008 Republican National Convention and married in 2011. They welcomed their son, Hudson, in 2015.
