Early Life and Education

Karl-Heinz Urban was born on June 7, 1972, in Wellington, New Zealand. From a young age, he exhibited a strong interest in performing arts, which was encouraged through involvement in school and local theatre. He began his education at St. Mark's Church School in Wellington, where he participated in stage productions, and later attended Wellington College. In 2004, Karl Urban married his longtime partner, makeup artist Natalie Wihongi. The couple had two sons together: Hunter, born on December 16, 2000, and Indiana, born in January 2005—named after the protagonist of the Indiana Jones film franchise. The couple amicably separated in June 2014.

Since 2014, Urban has been in a relationship with actress Katee Sackhoff. Known for her role in Battlestar Galactica, Sackhoff and Urban have occasionally appeared in public together, though they generally keep their relationship private.
