Kelly Brianne Clarkson was born on April 24, 1982. She is an American singer, songwriter, and children's book author. Her rise to fame began in 2002 when she won the inaugural season of American Idol. Since then, she has become one of the most commercially successful and influential artists to emerge from the show. Her parents are Jeanne Ann and Stephen Michael Clarkson.

Education
Clarkson attended Pauline Hughes Middle School before graduating from Burleson High School. Upon graduation, she was offered scholarships by the University of Texas at Austin, the Berklee College of Music, and the University of North Texas. However, she declined these offers to focus entirely on pursuing a music career.
American Idol and Breakthrough Success
In 2002, encouraged by friends, Clarkson auditioned for the first season of American Idol. She won the competition on September 4, 2002, defeating the runner-up with 58% of the vote. Her victory earned her a recording contract and instantly launched her into the national spotlight.
Just weeks later, she released her debut single, “A Moment Like This,” on September 17, 2002. The song debuted at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and quickly soared to number one, breaking a record for the largest chart leap at the time. The single became the best-selling U.S. single of 2002.
Breakthrough Album: Thankful
Clarkson released her debut studio album, Thankful, in 2003. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in its first week. It was certified double Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and sold over 4.5 million copies worldwide. Its lead single, “Miss Independent,” became an international hit and charted in the top ten in several countries.
