Logan Maile Lei Tom was born on May 25, 1981, in Napa, California, and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. Of Chinese-Hawaiian descent, she frequently spent holidays in Hawaii. During her high school years, she set multiple Utah state records in volleyball and was also active in basketball and track and field. Tom briefly attended Stanford University, where she majored in International Relations, but left before completing her degree in order to pursue her volleyball career full time.
Logan Tom has represented the United States in four Olympic Games: Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and London 2012. She made history as the youngest woman ever selected for the U.S. Olympic volleyball team at age 19. A standout performer, Tom helped the U.S. team earn silver medals in both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Her achievements cemented her reputation as one of the most consistent and skilled outside hitters in American volleyball.
Tom launched her international professional career in 2003 with the Brazilian club MRV/Minas, competing in Brazil’s top-tier Superliga. Following the 2004 Olympics, she briefly shifted her focus to beach volleyball, competing on the domestic tour and earning a fifth-place finish at the Athens Games. However, she soon returned to indoor volleyball and expanded her global presence, playing for numerous clubs across Europe and Asia. In 2008, she joined Hisamitsu Springs, a Japanese team based in Kobe City and Tosu City.
Throughout her decorated career, Logan Tom has received numerous accolades that underscore her dominance in volleyball. In 1999, she was awarded the Gatorade National Player of the Year. She was named Sportswoman of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation in 2003. Her impressive performance continued with MVP honors at the 2004 FIVB World Grand Prix and Best Server in the same tournament. In 2006, she was named AVP Rookie of the Year in beach volleyball. She earned MVP honors again during the FIVB World Cup in 2007 and was named Best Receiver at the 2010 FIVB World Championship. In 2011, she claimed a gold medal at the NORCECA Championship in Caguas, Puerto Rico, where she was also named Best Server.
In addition to her on-court accomplishments, Tom gained public visibility beyond sports. In 2005, she was featured in FHM magazine and was included in its list of the "100 Sexiest Women." Committed to the growth of the sport, she also contributes to Volleyball1on1, a website dedicated to volleyball instruction. She shares her expertise through online coaching and video tutorials, serving as an educational resource for aspiring players worldwide.
