Laura Mackenzie Phillips was born in 1959 in Alexandria, Virginia. She is the daughter of John Phillips, singer and founding member of the 1960s vocal group The Mamas & the Papas, and his first wife, Susan Adams, a homemaker. Mackenzie has one full sibling, Jeffrey Phillips, as well as three half-siblings: Tamerlane, Bijou, and Chynna Phillips. Chynna Phillips is notably known for being part of the music group Wilson Phillips.
She attended Highland Hall Waldorf School in California. At the age of 12, she began performing in a band with three classmates. It was during one of their performances that a casting agent discovered them, leading to her audition—and eventual casting—in the film American Graffiti (1973).
Mackenzie Phillips gained early recognition for her role in George Lucas’s coming-of-age film American Graffiti, where she played Carol Morrison, the teenage traveling companion of a drag-racing high schooler. She later rose to broader fame for her portrayal of Julie Cooper on the CBS sitcom One Day at a Time. Her character, a rebellious teenager, later became Julie Cooper Horvath after marrying on the show.
Phillips continued acting in various television series and films, with one of her later notable roles being in Disney Channel’s science fiction series So Weird, where she played a rock musician and mother to the lead character.
Mackenzie Phillips has been married twice. Her first marriage was to Jeffrey Sessler, a music industry executive and the son of Freddie Sessler; the union lasted for approximately three years. Her second marriage was to rock guitarist Michael Barakan, known professionally as Shane Fontayne. That marriage lasted about four years, and the couple had a son, Shane Barakan, who is also a musician.
Throughout her life, Mackenzie Phillips has struggled with long-term substance abuse. In 2008, she was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for possession of heroin and cocaine during a security screening. She later pleaded guilty and entered a drug rehabilitation program. The court dismissed the case after her successful completion of treatment.
Phillips appeared on the third season of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2010, aiming to recover from her addiction. Later that year, she openly discussed her recovery process during an appearance on The View.
