Robert Lee Griffin III, widely known by his nickname RG3, was born on February 12, 1990, in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. He is a former American football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL). Griffin first gained national recognition in 2011 when he won the Heisman Trophy while playing college football at Baylor University. He was selected second overall in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins (now known as the Washington Commanders) and was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in his debut season.
Griffin graduated a semester early from Copperas Cove High School in Texas, where he ranked seventh in his class and served as class president. At age 17, he enrolled at Baylor University in the spring semester of 2008. In addition to football, he was a standout athlete on Baylor’s track and field team. Specializing in the 400-meter hurdles, he won titles at both the Big 12 Conference Championship and the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship, setting a regional record.
He placed third in the NCAA in the 400-meter hurdles and competed in the semifinals of the U.S. Olympic Trials. Academically, Griffin earned his bachelor's degree in political science in just three years, maintaining a 3.67 GPA and appearing twice on the Dean’s List.
At Copperas Cove High School, Griffin excelled in football, track, and basketball, earning a reputation as a three-sport star. He played quarterback for two seasons, passing for 2,001 yards and 25 touchdowns in his junior year, with just two interceptions. He also rushed for 876 yards and scored eight rushing touchdowns that same season. His senior year included 1,356 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, along with 1,285 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns, leading Copperas Cove to a 13–2 record and a berth in the 2007 Class 4A Division I state championship game, where they finished as runners-up.
On the track, Griffin achieved national attention by breaking state records in the 110m (13.55 seconds) and 300m hurdles (35.33 seconds). In 2007, he was the top-ranked high school athlete in the nation in the 400m hurdles.
Griffin's high school performances earned him a four-star rating from recruiting services, which ranked him as the fourth-best dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the 42nd-best player overall in Texas for the class of 2008. During his junior year at Baylor, his football talent attracted increasing attention from NFL scouts. Initially not projected as a first-round pick, he rose rapidly in evaluations and became one of the top quarterback prospects. Griffin officially declared for the 2012 NFL Draft and was selected with the second overall pick.
