Early Life and Education

Ryan Moore was born in 1982 in Tacoma, Washington, and grew up in the nearby city of Puyallup. He graduated from Puyallup High School in 2001, where he lettered in golf all four years. Although he initially attended Cascade Christian School, which did not have a golf team, he later transferred to Puyallup High School, a Class 4A school with an established golf program. Moore finished as the runner-up at the 2000 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and won the 2001 Washington State High School Individual Championship, where he competed against Andres Gonzales, a future teammate at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

College Career and Amateur Achievements

Moore accepted a golf scholarship from UNLV, where he played for the Rebels for four seasons and earned a degree in communications and public relations in 2005. His amateur golf career peaked in 2004, prior to his senior season in college. That year, he captured several major titles, including the U.S. Amateur, the U.S. Amateur Public Links, the Western Amateur, and the NCAA Individual Championship—an unprecedented feat in a single year of amateur golf. Moore also received the Ben Hogan Award in 2005, presented annually to the top college golfer in the United States.

Transition to Professional Golf

Also in 2005, Moore was awarded the Haskins Award, recognizing him as the most outstanding collegiate golfer in the nation. He made a notable appearance at the 2005 Masters Tournament, where he finished 13th overall and earned the distinction of low amateur, securing an invitation to the 2006 Masters. His final tournament as an amateur was the 2005 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, where he made the cut and finished tied for 57th.
