Seth Gabel was born in 1981 in Florida, United States. He is of Jewish heritage and was raised under the adoptive surname of his stepfather, Cosentino. Gabel attended the University School of Nova Southeastern University in the Davie area of Florida. He later pursued higher education at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where his passion for acting was further cultivated.
While attending New York University, Seth Gabel met actress Bryce Dallas Howard, the daughter of acclaimed actor and director Ron Howard. The couple dated for five years before marrying in 2006.
