Stephen Glenn Martin was born on August 14, 1945, in Waco, Texas, to Mary Lee and Glenn Vernon Martin. His father worked in real estate, though he also harbored aspirations of becoming an actor. The family later relocated to California, where Steve was raised primarily in Inglewood and Garden Grove.

In 1960, as a teenager, Martin began working at Disneyland in the Magic Shop located in Fantasyland. This experience proved pivotal, as he developed skills in magic, juggling, and balloon art, performing for park guests and honing his stage presence. He later attended Santa Ana College, where he took courses in drama and English poetry, laying the foundation for his future in comedy and writing.

Entry into Comedy and Screenwriting

Martin's writing career took off when he joined the writing team of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late 1960s. His sharp wit and innovative comedic approach earned him an Emmy Award in 1969. He later contributed to other television programs, including The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour and The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.

During the 1970s, Martin became a prominent stand-up comedian, known for his absurdist humor and offbeat performances.
